    Meet Dorwatha Woods - Change Agent #0024 of our #SCN1000ChangeAgents Series.

    Dorwatha Woods was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1958, the 6th daughter of Ltc. and Mrs. Louis M. Woods. She received a global worldview being an Army brat with a family that relocated every 18 months. She attended Hampton Institute for her BS degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Early Childhood Education. She continued her education at University of Michigan for her MA degree in Special Education: Learning Disabilities and Emotional Impairment. In 2012 she completed a 2-year Spanish Language and Cultural study at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. in the Murray Institute. She completed a 29 - year career as the Principal of Ascension Catholic School on June 30, 2016. She had a positive vision for inner city scholars on the northside of Minneapolis to academically achieve at high levels. Under her tenacious leadership, her vision was realized largely through significant school partnerships such as the Northside Achievement Zone, MacPhail Center for Music, and the Flaherty Family Foundation, many corporate partners and individuals. After spending a year caring for a new grandchild and working part-time for Creighton University mentoring MA level candidates in their MAGIS program and helping facilitate the interview process for the Flaherty Family Foundation, she is now employed full time as a Scholarship Facilitator for the Flaherty Family Foundation. It is work that resonates with who she is and how she has spent her life’s focus.

    She was awarded the 2014 WEM Outstanding Educator Award from the WEM Foundation and Synergy & Leadership Exchange in “recognition of superior contributions of educators whose leadership and dedication inspire a spirit of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities outside the traditional education system and classroom”. She received the 2013 Duet Award from MacPhail Center for Music for her exemplary leadership in forming the first school partnership with MacPhail Center for Music 25 years ago, which has been the model used by MacPhail in forming over 80 additional school partnerships. Other honors include the WCCO Excellent Educator Award in 2016, the Inspiring Women Award in 2014 from the MN Lynx Basketball Team and Land O’Lakes, Inc., the Excellence in Catechesis Leadership Award in 2003 from the Archdiocese of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Mahala S. Evans Award – Outstanding Soror in 2009 from the Gamma Tau Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., and the 23rdAnnual Archbishop John Ireland Award in 1991 “For those who distinguish themselves in promoting better human relations based on justice.”.

    Ms. Woods served 6 years as the President of the Gamma Tau Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. – a black business women’s sorority that targets women’s issues and gains scholarship dollars for women and girls to attend college. She is instrumental in making sure that women and girls have a fair advantage in the fields of business and science. Ms. Dorwatha Woods has volunteered her time as a cook for the Clare Housing Organization, cooking monthly for clients in residential care that battle the effects of AIDS. She also was Volunteer of the Year at Value Village where she volunteered each Saturday for 3 years. She is a mother of 2 grown daughters and two grand babies. She is an avid cook, swimmer, and gardener.     Meet Cyndi Shanahan - Change Agent #0023 of our #SCN1000ChangeAgents Series.

    Cyndi Shanahan is a social change agent and nonprofit/philanthrophy leader. She is passionate about making the lives of her community better through innovative and inclusive leadership in the areas of empowerment of women, philanthropic giving, and nonprofit engagement. She began her philanthropy as a youth through the Girl Scouts and work in the city of Cleveland. She continued her leadership as an adult and has dedicated her retirement to impact her community through inspiring those who are able to give strategically and collectively of their time, talents, and funds.

    Cyndi has served directly with three key organizations:

    • The Giving Circle of HOPE
    • Women Giving Back, and AAUW

    In each of these organizations, her impact was felt most strongly with her ability to identify and implement new programs to extend the reach of the organization in a meaningful way. Through these organizations Cyndi makes connections within and among other community organizations resulting in an amplification of collective impact.

    Examples include introducing a new grant giving category, expanding geographic service to over 100 entities throughout the DC Metro area, and increasing members and donors in a materially impactful way. She is keen to create networks and leverage relationships. She uses the skills of strategic planning, business line management, process improvement and organizational change gained as a Vice President at Freddie Mac to create positive outcomes.

    Meet Beth Flaherty - Change Agent #0022 of our #SCN1000ChangeAgents Series.

    Beth was thrilled to join the Flaherty Family Foundation (FFF) as the first executive director in September of 2015. The Flaherty Family Foundation provides high school college prep scholarships to high potential students with economic need. Flaherty has expanded and formalized the Scholarship Opportunity from 11 Flaherty Scholars at three high schools in the Twin Cities to 400 Flaherty Scholars at 32 high schools in Minnesota, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey and Montana. After student-teaching at Highland Park Senior High School (St. Paul) in the fall of 1999, Flaherty moved to Breckenridge, Colorado and taught ski school to preschoolers. Her first year in the classroom was split between Minnesota Business Academy, a charter high school in St. Paul, and co-teaching third grade at Ascension Catholic School in Minneapolis.

    She spent the next eight years teaching middle and high school social studies and coaching gymnastics in Summit County, Colorado. While in Summit Country she was a mentor with Mountain Mentors, received the Asset Builder of the Month award from Summit Prevention Alliance and earned recognition as the Jefferson County Coach of the year in 2008. She spent six years teaching in Arlington, Virginia at Washington-Lee High School and at an alternative school, New Directions, which serves students involved in the juvenile justice system.

    In addition, Flaherty has been a foster parent in Arlington County since 2010 and recently began mentoring with Capital Partners for Education in Washington, D.C. Flaherty earned her BA in Social Studies from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. While at Hamline, Flaherty was a two-time captain of the gymnastics team, a four-time All-American, and National Champion on Floor Exercise. She was inducted into the Hamline University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. Flaherty received an MA in Educational Leadership in 2006 and an MA in Curriculum and Instruction in 2010 from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. Flaherty currently resides in Arlington, Virginia.

    Meet Sharmila Karamchandani - Change Agent #0017 of our #SCN1000ChangeAgents Series.

    Sharmila Karamchandani, a graphic designer, art educator, and an entrepreneur coach has a passion for design and working in arts education and community non-profits. Sharmila acquired her MFA in Graphic Design from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and has been teaching graphic design for more than a decade in several local colleges and universities. Sharmila has continued her ongoing work as a freelancer for more than two decades. She founded Khush Designs in November of 2014. In addition to being the creative head at Khush Designs, and teaching Graphic Design, she is a Lead Entrepreneur Coach at Empowered Women International (EWI). In the fall of 2006, she attended the Entrepreneur Training for Success (ETS), a business coaching program for start-ups at EWI, which helped her to market herself as an artist. She has worked at EWI in various capacities including a volunteer, mentor, graphic designer, and trainer.

    Sharmila was honored with the Creativity and Commitment award in 2008 for her extraordinary service to EWI. Sharmila always wanted to be an educator. In 2008, she was awarded ‘Teacher of the Year’ from Westwood College and Virginia Commission of the Arts (VCA).
